FOREWORD

Transcripts of Early County Records of New Jersey is one of a number of bibliographies of historical materials prepared throughout the United States, by workers on the Historical Records Survey of the Work Projects Administration.

The Historical Records Survey was undertaken in the winter of 1935-36 for the purpose of providing useful employment to needy, unemployed historians, lawyers, teachers, and research and clerical workers. In carrying cut this objective, the project was organized to compile inventories of historical materials, particularly the unpublished government documents and records Which are basic in the administration of local government, and which provide invaluable data for students of political, economic, and social history. This volume is so designed that it can be used by the historian in his research in unprinted sources in the same way he used the library card catalog for printed sources.

The successful conclusion of the work of the Historical Records Survey, even in a single county, would not be possible without the support of public officials. Their cooperation is gratefully acknowledged,

The Survey was organized and directed by Luther H. Evans until March 1, l940. Since that date it is directed by Sargent B. Child as National Director. The program operates as a nation-
wide project in the Division of Professional and Service Projects,

of which, Florence Herr, .Assistant Administrator, is in charge.
F.C. Harrington, Commissioner

PREFACE

The New Jersey Historical Records Survey Project was organized in February 1936, as a unit of the Works Progress Administration. It operates as a statewide project under the local sponsorship of the New Jersey State Planning Board. The technical supervision of the survey is exercised nationally by Mr. Sargent B. Child, National Director. State administrative supervision is provided by Mrs. Elizabeth C. Denny Vann. The project, at present, is under the additional supervision of Mr. R. C. Branion, Regional Director of WPA.

The survey has as its objective the preparation of complete inventories of the municipal, county, state and federal archives in New Jersey, and the publication of these inventories as guides to the material of greatest historical interest. In addition to these inventories, work is proceeding in the cataloging and calendaring of manuscript collections, the inventorying of church archives, and the transcription of some of the earliest public records.

This publication is one of a series containing transcriptions of selected groups of documents of old Gloucester County. The transcriptions were made by a local project under the supervision of Cedric V. Miller and sponsored since the inception of the WPA by the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders. The local project became part of the New Jersey Historical Records Project on February 15, 1940. All transcriptions have been checked and edited by the editorial office of the Historical Records Survey. Valuable assistance in this phase of the work has been given by Russell E. Swayze, Directing Supervisor of the Southern Region and Gustave Koeppe, Assistant Project Supervisor.

This volume is a publication of the Transcription Department of the New Jersey Historical Records Survey. The introduction was written by Harry P Fox, a member of the New Jersey Ear. The entire volume was edited under the supervision of Harold P. Mountan, with the advice and assistance of lax Birnbauci, Consultant.

In presenting these volumes, due acknowledgment must be made to Frank H. Stewart, well known historian and President of the Gloucester County Historical Society, who was responsible for the initiation and general direction of the work as sponsor superintendent, until September 1939, at which time Hugh Mehorter, Vice-President of the Gloucester County Historical Society and a member of the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Gloucester County, was appointed to succeed Mr. Stewart.. The cooperation of Mr. Mehorter as sponsor supervisor and his associates on the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Gloucester County for their continued financial support and sponsorship of the local project from December 21, 1934, is gratefully acknowledged. Mention should also be made of Dr. Carlos B. Godfrey, Director of the Public Record Office of the State of New Jersey, Trenton, who permitted work to be done on the old county documents and encouraged the task by his approval of the results.

V.

The New Jersey Historical Records Survey Project wishes to express its gratitude to Robert W. Allan State Administrator of WPA, for his personal advice and attention which were of inestimable aid to the production of this volume and to the continuance of the Survey under local sponsorship.

A list of other publications of the Historical Records Survey in New Jersey is given at the end of this volume. Requests for information concerning any unit of the survey should be addressed to the undersigned at 1060 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey.
